Breaking News: A fearless Bar Emperor Ogbonna decried the humiliation military men subjected the commuters along the Southeastern Nigerian roads and call on the federal government to look into the situation.
Over the last few months after the presidential election which saw Ahmed Tinubu emerging as the nation's president, military men have moved in to Southeastern Nigeria and blocked many roads near their check points. Commuters have been made to trekk to the last military check point before embarking on the bus while their driver driving their bus empty until it gets to where they are waiting for it. A Barrister of the region's extract decried the humiliation the commuters are subjected to and urged the federal government to look into the ugly situation.
Bar Emperor Ogbonna said and I quote
"This is totally unacceptable.
If you are travelling from Aba, Umuahia etc to Abaja, you would observe something very bad in the south east.
As soon as you reach a military check point, soldiers will make you to come out of your vehicle, and you will trek, abd trek, and the bus will be driving empty and pass the check point, and the soldiers will not even check the bus, as it will just drive pass, and you will get back into the bus.
This happens only in the south east because as soon as you leave Enugu state, and move to Benue or Kogi, nobody does that to you.
It looks as if this is to humiliate you.
I understand that we have a security situation in Nigeria but that of the south east is not worse than that of other regions.
There are kidnappers and herdsmen attack along Benue state and Kogi state roads, why are the commuters there not made to pass the humiliating ordeal of alighting from their vehicles and walking a long distance at the military checkpoints.
At the worst part of this is that there are so many military checkpoints in the south east more than the other regions and one may be tempted to ask if they are trekimg to their destination because you see the checkpoints after few miles and you are expected to repeat the ordeal.
This is unacceptable
The South East people are not slaves in this country and the military authorities have to stop this.
Secure the land but try another means to do so without humiliating the people of this region. We are not under a military siege or under a curfew. We are civilians. This is a complete breach of the fundamental human rights of the people and is unacceptable .
The Governors of Igboland should stop all these nonsense".
